A brilliant performance away against Uckfield Grasshoppers in the Tournament Shield. A draw against any A-division team is a great result - but we deserved to win.
We started very strongly and kept Uckfield in their half for the first ten minutes. Uckfield scored a goal against the run of play, but worse was to follow when a speculative shot looped over Jamie Hards two minutes later. To be two goals down when we were dominating the game was a bit of a shock, but the boys kept plugging away and got back into the game when Jamie Wickham got his head to a Chris Nissen corner. Minutes later we drew level, when the same two players combined again. Towards the end of the first half, Michael Ide latched on to a long clearance and coolly slotted past the Uckfield goalkeeper. We kept our advantage until half time when Uckfield hit the bar from the penalty spot after a harsh handball decision.
We started the second half as we had finished the first and we continued to dominate the match - with most of the possession and territorial advantage - and we squandered several chances to kill the game off. Jamie Wickham shot wide, Mark Harrison was unlucky not to score with an overhead kick and Michael Ide hit the post. We couldn't find the fourth goal and we paid the price when we failed to deal with a corner and Uckfield equalised.
Although disappointed with the result, we can take heart from a great performance against an A-Division team. Lots of great performances throughout the team, but Tom Ryan was given the man-of-the-match award for his decision to play on with a badly-cut lip after being kicked in the face. |
