A fantastic performance by a depleted team as Chris Nissen pulled out of the team the night before. We only had ten players against the team second in the league, who had won their last match 10-0.
Unbelievably we totally dominated the early part of the match, missing two great chances in the first three minutes before Nick Edwards found himself in the right place at the right time to score.
Michael Ide then scored a hat-trick in the space of ten minutes, the goals made by the superb aware play by Chris Newble, who was the most skilful player on the pitch. Our front pairing looks a lot better since the departure of Jamie Wickham - we've become less one-dimensional.
Weladen Colts got back into the game when Tom Ryan was adjudged to have fouled one of their forwards, but they were lucky to score from the resulting penalty that hit the post and rebounded in off Jamie Hards. He was caught off his line shortly afterwards, so it was 4-2 at half time.
It was a very warm sunny day, and being a player short on a big pitch began to tell as the game wore on, as Wealden were able to introduce three fresh pairs of legs. This called for some heroic performances from the defenders and Greg Byrne in midfield. The next goal was going to be crucial and unfortunately it went to Wealden and the equaliser eventually came, leaving us ten minutes to hold out with Weadlen encamped in our half, but we produced another Rorke's Drift performance to hang on grimly for a point.
It would have been unfair to single anyone out after such a great team performance. |
