Pressure on the Ridgewaye goal from Tonbridge (in striped shirts)
A good pre-season workout against old rivals Ridgewaye. Without our usual defensive pairing of Tom Ryan and Martin Hill, we were always likely to have a bit of a soft centre, which Ridgewaye exploited in the first half, but the boys showed good character to come back and there were promising debuts from the three new boys.

There was very little between the teams in the early part of the match, but Ross McCarter gave us the lead midway through the first half, latching on to a through ball. Ridgewaye struck back with two goals in two minutes, taking advantage of uncertainly in defence and catching us on the break. Mike Ide looked lively when he came on and was unlucky to hit the post, so we were 2-1 down at half time.

We dominated the second half from the kick-off and Mike Ide equalised and then put us into the lead with a well taken goal, knocking the ball over the defender's head and unleashing a powerful shot. We looked likely to go further ahead, but the Ridgewaye keeper made a series of fine saves and Ian Dipple was denied by the crossbar. Ridgewaye started to come back into the match, and they equalised when we failed to deal with a near post corner.

Both sides continued to create chances, and we finished slightly the stronger of the two teams, but 3-3 was a fair result, and we can look forward to a couple of similarly close encounters in the league. There were some good defensive performances, particularly from Ollie Leigh, Chris Newbury dominated the midfield along with Greg Byrne, but Mike Ide was man-of-the-match for his two goals.
