A disappointing start to the league season, losing 5-2 to old rivals Foresters 2000 after losing some key players.
Ben Spring pulled out just before the match with a leg injury, meaning that we lost our captain and were down to ten players, but Foresters 2000 only brought ten players.
We dominated the first half hour of the match, rarely allowing the opposition out of their half, but we couldn't find the net. After 32 minutes, against the run of play, Foresters 2000 took the lead.
Our top scorer Jamie Wickham was struggling for much of the first half and early in the second half he was only able to hobble and had to be withdrawn after Foresters 2000 went 2-0 up, leaving us with only nine players.
After this we capitulated, and rapidly got to 5-0 down, but with ten minutes to go we began a fightback. Mark Holden started getting forward to help Greg Byrne in midfield, and Michael Ide became more direct in running at the Foresters 2000 defence and got his reward with two well-taken goals.
The boys showed great character in finishing strongly when the odds were stacked against them, and hopefully will build on this when we get back to full strength. Mark Holden was awarded man of the match. |
