We were able to field a full-strength team for the trip to Old Town Boys, the team with a clear lead in the C division and who beat B division leaders Broad Oak in the cup. The team who had beaten every team they played at home by at least eight goals.
There had been heavy rain overnight and in the morning, and the pitch was sodden but playable.
We started well and had most of the possession, but got caught on the break after eight minutes when one of their very large defenders knocked a long ball behind our defence. Despite a last-ditch tackle by Tom Ryan, Old Town scored.
I was concerned that this might open the floodgates, but we continued to give as good as we got, and although Jamie Hards had to make a couple of great saves to keep us in the game, we ended the first half on top.
We started the second half a bit slowly, but soon got back into routine. Chris Newbury went close after Ross McCarter had closed down the goalkeeper who had an attack of the Grobellaars. Old Town were lucky to go further ahead ten minutes into the second half with a well-taken free-kick that Jamie almost saved.
We continued to battle and the pressure eventually paid off and Chris Newbury scored with fifteen minutes to go. We continued to create more of the chances and Old Town Boys were hanging on at the end.
A fantastic team performance peppered with fine individual displays, notably Jamie Hards in goal, Martin Hill and Tom Ryan in defence, Greg Byrne in midfield and Chris Newble up front, but man-of-the-match was goalscorer Chris Newbury. |
