A very encouraging performance against Cranbrook Town, whose manager said we had 'played them off the park'. We had most of the possession and there were good battling performances throughout the team, but Cranbrook had a more clinical finisher and they took their chances better than we did.
Having gone 3-0 down within the first ten minutes, I got the impression that it wasn't going to be our day. Even at that stage of the game we had more possession, but Cranbrook seemed to score with every breakaway. Jamie Hards was particularly unlucky with the second goal, having made a fantastic save.
Our possession eventually paid off when man-of-the-match Jamie Wickham scored, although the ball seemed to take an agonisingly long time to cross the line. When Jamie Wickham added another towards the end of the first half we started to believe we could get something from the game.
We began the second half as we had ended the first, totally dominant. Jamie Wickham was one-on-one against the goalkeeper within a few minutes and when he seemed certain to get his hat-trick he produced a tame shot which the Cranbrook goalie caught. We continued to create more chances, but twice got caught on the break by Cranbrook's pacy front players.
We've got to learn how to win and get the winning habit. We've got to make more of our chances. We've got to score more goals. Goals win matches. We might have won the match on points, but we've got to win on goals. |
