Jamie Wickham weaving his way through the Langton defence

It was difficult to get the players motivated for their first match in over a month, when they knew they had already done the job by securing the title in their previous match. As a result they were comprehensively outplayed by a Langton Green team keen to get revenge.

Langton went ahead after ten minutes as James Faulkner was slow to come out of his goal to close down. More poor defending led to Langton's second goal after 23 minutes. Three minutes later Ross McCarter's desperate lunge diverted the ball into his own net, but at least he was back there trying to undo the damage done by the absence of challenges by the defenders.

Captain Ben Spring was harshly cautioned for querying the (Tonbridge) linesman's decision in the 30th minute and we ended the half by conceding another poor goal, when Tom Ryan's goal kick went straight to a Langton player who drove it home for their fourth.

After some harsh words the players were sent out for the second half with the expectation that they couldn't play any worse, but after three minutes they conceded a further goal after stand-in defender Chris Phillips failed to head the ball, and a misunderstanding between James Faulkner and Tom Ryan gifted Langton their sixth five minutes later.

We finally started playing in the last half of the match as Ben Spring was set up by Jamie Wickham to score in the 64th minute and Greg Byrne's persistence on the left was rewarded as his shot was fumbled into the net six minutes later.

Picking man-of-the-match was tough as there were so few competent performances, but Ross McCarter got the nod for the effort he put in.
