Greg Byrne breaks through against Wadhurst

We overcame our disappointment at failing to get the league season under way, as Wadhurst arrived with an unregistered team and the match became a friendly. We put together a professional performance to record a comfortable 5-0 win.

Wadhurst were only able to field 10 players, but they were fairly solid in the first half, without giving stand-in goalkeeper Dan Tester anything to do. We created a few chances, but often overpassed in the penalty box and failed to get enough shots in. The introduction of Mike Ide paid immediate dividends as he latched on to a pass from Greg Byrne and his shot was turned in by Ross McCarter.

Wadhurst were obvously pleased to keep the score at 1-0 at half time, but as the match wore on they began to tire and our dominance became total. Martin Hill and Tom Ryan were rock solid at the back, despite provocation from a Wadhurst player who made a series of late challenges.

We got our second goal as Ian Dipple intercepted up a kick from the Wadhurst goalkeeper and drilled it back past him with his left foot. Mike Ide shot us into a 3-0 lead shortly afterwards and Chris Newbury made it 4 shortly afterwards.

Ross McCarter got his second of the game, but was given the chance to make it a hat-trick when we were awarded a penalty. We were denied a blatant penalty when a Wadhurst player deliberately handled, but when the same player repeated the offence and the ref gave the spot kick, he blasted the ball against the crossbar and failed in his attempt to head in the rebound.

A satisfactory morning's work, maintaining our unbeaten record for the season and achieving a clean sheet. Greg Byrne was man-of-the-match for a typically hard-working, committed performance.
