| GUEST MATCH REPORT BY DAVE SPRING
We expected to win based on the stats, but Cranbrook were not a pushover. The result of 15-0 could have been even higher if we had played more intelligently and more accurately. Conditions were sunny and dry, with the early frost gone, leaving heavy ground.
The early pressure came mostly from Tonbridge, Ben Spring, Max Turner and Chris Phillips all failing to hit the target, then a good through ball from Ben Spring was picked up by Chris Phillips who scored. More chances were missed, or saved by Cranbrook's goalie, then a corner by Ben Spring was hit against the bar by Max Turner and Chris Phillips got the rebound for goal two.
We showed occasional good passing sequences and attacks, but failed to increase the score, including a good chip from Jamie Wickham which was saved by the goalie and the post. Ben Spring picked up a goal kick and put it into the net, then shortly after Ben Spring made a good run, releasing the ball for Ross McCarter for another goal, then Jamie Wickham provided a good corner to Ben Spring's head to make it 5-0 at half time.
Although in the lead, we had not been convincing. The key message for the second half was to be more vocal, calling and warning each other. The second half immediately saw Ben Spring fight for the ball and hit a solid shot home. Once again attacks did not result in goals, Greg Byrne was just wide, several were just high, or saved. Ben Spring and Jamie Wickham seemed to get some good moves going and Jamie Wickham scored from Ben Spring's pass down the wing. Chris Phillips made a good run, but found the keeper rather than the net.
Jamie Wickham was controlling the ball well and found the net again, then Ben Spring and Jamie Wickham repeated their passing runs and attacks, but did not find the net, until Ben Spring got another goal after a bit of bagatelle in the area.
Although we had been dominant Cranbrook forced James Faulkner to make an excellent save. After this Ben Spring controlled the ball well scoring again, followed by a powerful shot by Jamie Wickham that gave the Cranbrook keeper no chance, and almost immediately Ben Spring did a very similar thing, the keeper almost losing a finger attempting to stop it.
The next corner was taken by Jamie Wickham and a lovely head-in by Ben Spring. Jack Holden repeated the head-in corner soon after, and the next corner saw a header by Martin Hill, then Jack Holden, narrowly missing goal. The last goal of the game was a massive hit by Greg Byrne from way out of the area that easily beat the keeper.
Our defence played competently, our midfield was in control, our attack was not repelled, but we missed as many as we scored. Second half saw us play much better; we need to do it all the time. Ben Spring was man-of-the-match for his performance and verbal encouragement as captain.
(There was some uncertainty about the result - we agreed 14-0 with Cranbrook's ref, but it should have been 15-0.) |
