We knew we had a difficult match in prospect, drawn away against the team at the top of the A division, but things got more difficult as we found that we were without Martin Hill and Chris Newbury and had no substitutes.

We needed to reorganise the defence and midfield and were very vulnerable in what was only our second match of the season, against a very skilful and well-organised team. We managed to keep them out for 1 minute and 30 seconds. They scored again in the fifth minute and got their third a minute later. But credit to the Tonbridge boys, their heads didn't drop and they battled to stop Hastings scoring for another six minutes, then they had two nine-minute spells without conceding. and then defended well for twelve minutes to keep the score down to 6-0 at half-time.

The second half was even better. Ben Spring dropped back to left back to block the Hastings team's most profitable route to goal, aided by NicK Edwards who supported well, with Tom Ryan holding the centre of defence. Greg Byrne started to dominate in central midfield and Jamie Wickham fought for everything on the left. Chances were still few and far between, but at least we were able to take the game to the opposition and James Faulkner made some good saves. To concede only two further goals in 40 minutes of football against the top team in the Crowborough League was some achievement.

There were lots of good performances, even more valuable as there were two or three poor performances, but Tom Ryan was chosen as man of the match.
