The fixtures secretary did us no favours in the first round of the knockout cup. Eight out of the ten C Division team teams were drawn against each other, one C Division team team was drawn against a team from the B Division, and we were drawn against the team that won the A Division. Well, not quite. The team that won the A Division, but strengthened by the addition of the captain of the team that were runners-up in the A Division. Thanks Robin!
With a bare minimum of eleven players, we played astoundingly well in the first 15 minutes and didn't look at all out of place. We might even have taken the lead, but Michael Ide hit a tame shot he himself described as a pass to the goalkeeper, and Jamie Hards made a great save and Tom Ryan the tackle of the season to keep the scores level.
But East Grinstead finally broke through in the eighteenth minute and they grew in strength throughout the match. Some of the goals were fortunate - the third was an own goal, the fourth a generous penalty - but we ended the half 7-0 down.
We continued to take the game to East Grinstead - there was no point in playing defensively as goal difference is irrelevant in a knockout competition - and we finally got our reward when Michael Ide scored when put though by Chris Nissen at 13-0 down. East Grinstead added another goal and the match finished at 14-1.
East Grinstead were simply unplayable and we did well to keep them down to 14 goals and every player deserves credit for sticking to their task and battling away right to the end. |
