It was good to get playing again, and it was a good performance, but for the second time this season we got mugged by Ridgewaye. We did enough to win it and deserved at least a draw.
Ben Spring put on the captain's armband for the first time in a league game this season and we quickly got control of the game. We created a few chances before an under-the-weather Chris Newbury gave us the lead. We held the lead for only a minute as Ridgewaye scored with their first attack of the match. Then Chris Newbury put Chris Newble through and he made no mistake to restore the advantage. We continued to have the best of the match and had a 2-1 lead at half-time.
Mark Holden was feeling unwell, so he didn't return and Ben Spring was finding his return to action very tiring. The three half-time substitutions did little to change the pattern of the game and we continued to create chances, but the Ridgewaye keeper made some great saves. As the half wore on Ridgewaye started to get more into the game and a spell of pressure ended with Martin Hill diverting a dangerous cross past Jamie Hards. With time almost up Ridgewaye took the lead for the first time and even then we had a couple of chances to level the scores. But the result was a carbon copy of the home match.
A lot of players looked as though they were a bit heavy-legged after seven weeks without a game, but there were some great performances, notably from Martin Hill and Dan Tester in defence, Greg Byrne in midfield and Chris Newble up front, but Tom Ryan was chosen as man-of-the-match. |
