| We were hoping for a fairly comfortable victory in our first home game of the season against Dallington, a team we beat 5-1 in our last home game of last season. Our hopes lasted less than 2 minutes as Dallington took the lead, as one of their forwards beat our offside trap. Worse was to follow less than two minutes later as Martin Hill attempted to pass to Tom Ryan and the ball was intercepted by a Dallington forward who made it 2-0. In the 17th minute there was another defensive error that led to Dallington's third goal, the ball somehow squirming past James Faulkner in goal. As the half wore on we started to get into the game, but Dallington were well organised and had the confidende to play some good football. Ben Spring, Mike Ide and Chris Newbury had chances, but they all went over the bar. Major changes were needed at half-time, so Ben Spring moved up front alongside Jamie Wickham and Oliver Leigh came on in left midfield. Nick Edwards replaced Chris Phillips on the right. We started the half in a positive frame of mind, and scored after only 38 seconds - Chris Newbury played a lovely ball through to Ben Spring who finished with aplomb. We scored our second goal in the second minute of the second half, the Dallington goalkeeper unable to keep out a shot from Jamie Wickham. After this, we were in complete control, keeping Dallington in their own half. The chances continued to come and Ben Spring got his second in the 56th minute to level the scores. Then the Dallington keeper was unable to hold a Ben Spring corner from the left and Chris Newbury was on hand to give us the lead. Dallington started to get into our half, but the defenders played much better in the second half, while we continued to create chances, many falling to Ben Spring, but he was unable to add to his tally. Tom Ryan had a particularly good second half in defence, as did Ben Spring up front, and Jack Holden had a very impressive game, despite not liking playing on the left. Man of the match was Greg Byrne who won everything in midfield, got his head to every ball and made some strong runs. |
